A Doctoral/3rd Cycle degree (usually abbreviated Ph.D.) in Mathematics gives a broad and advanced knowledge of Mathematics and specialization driven to the creation of novel knowledge in this science.

There are two ways to obtain a Ph.D. in Mathematics in University of Minho: through the Doctoral Programme in Applied Mathematics or through a Ph.D. in Sciences with specialization in Mathematics.

The Doctoral Programme in Applied Mathematics results from a partnership between the Departments of Mathematics of the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto, with the collaboration of the University of Beira Interior, and is supported by the research units CIDMA, CINTESIS, CMAT, CMUP, ISR-P and LIAAD. The program includes a 1st year curriculum organized to allow each student to have first contact with research in mathematics, followed by three years dedicated to research activities and dissertation writing.

The other way to obtain a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics at the University of Minho is through a Ph.D. in Sciences with specialization in Mathematics. This programme does not include classes and the research work is done under the supervision of one (or more) member of DMA-UM.

Information about the former Doctoral Program in Mathematics and Applications, whose last edition began in the academic year 2015/2016, can be found here.
