Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Applications – PDMA -
(Universities of Minho and Aveiro)

The PhD Programme in Mathematics and Applications of the Universities of Minho and Aveiro will take place, during the school year of 2015/2016, at University of Aveiro.
This programme is now part of a consortium of doctoral programs, together with the Universities of Porto and Beira Interior, with 6 doctoral scholarships to assign.

Application deadline: 6 July-24 August

Application deadlines for PhD scholarships: 6 July-24 August

Application documents

The Departments of Mathematics of the University of Minho (DMA-UM) and of Aveiro (DMAT-UA) offer jointly an eight semester/240 ECTS Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Applications.

The first two semesters consist of six standard one-semester courses, one semester Research Lab course – wherein research themes are discussed and basic training in research techniques is provided – and one semester Thesis Project Preparation. The other six semesters will be devoted to research activities and the writing of a doctoral thesis.

The consorcium of PhD programmes is backed up by several research units classified with “Excelent” or “Very Good” by FCT. This ensures not only high quality scientific standards but also a great diversity of work in applied or pure mathematics as well as the possibility of interface with other fields of scientific knowledge:

Areas of expertise: Algebra, Geometry and Topology; Analysis and Applications; Statistics and Probability; Logic and Computation; Optimisation, Systems and Control.

Requirements for admission: Holders of a master degree in mathematics or related subjects; holders of a licenciatura or equivalent degree with adequate scientific preparation.

Location: The first two semester courses take place by turns at the University of Aveiro (2015-16) and at the University of Minho. Thesis work takes place at one of the four institutions where the respective supervisor is affiliated.
Details about deadlines and documentation can be found here.

  • Algebra and Topology
  • Analysis and Control of Linear Systems
  • Applications of Mathematics and Game Theory
  • Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control
  • Classes of Operators
  • Codes and Systems
  • Predictive Control
  • Elliptic and Parabolic PDEs

  • Algebraic Topology

Optional courses M1 and M2
Chosen amongst the mandatory or optional courses of the Master in Mathematics and Applications of DMAT-UA or from one of the Master courses of DMAT-UM or from other master or doctoral courses in other scientific areas, according to the student’s research profile.

The Scientific Committee may, exceptionally, reinforce the ECTS value of either “Research Laboratory” or “Thesis Project construction”, or of both, thus allowing for avoidance of one or both M1 and M2 courses; however when the first year takes place at the UA, one of them is mandatory and must be taken in a scientific area other than mathematics.
