The Department of Mathematics (DMAT) is a permanent subunit of the School of Sciences of the University of Minho (UM), whose mission is to create, teach and apply knowledge in the field of Mathematics. It comprises 59 members. The DMAT develops its activity in the two campuses of UM: the Campus of Azurém (located in Guimarães) and the Campus of Gualtar (located in Braga). It is responsible for teaching the mathematics subjects of the different courses at UM, in particular those related to Science and Engineering, and manages several cycles of study, both at undergraduate and graduate level, many of which in partnership with other Departments of UM.

At the level of research, DMAT shares human and infrastructure resources with Centre of Mathematics (CMAT), the research unit of UM in the field of Mathematics. The research work carried out by DMAT staff comprises the majority of the areas of Mathematics, pure and applied, with many applications in a vast spectrum of fields, from Medicine to Social Sciences.

Finally, the DMAT also promotes the interaction with the society and public awareness of science, by promoting talks for general audiences, establishing collaboration with high schools, and the rendering of services to the community.
