Abstract: The theory of distributions was presented by Laurent Schwartz during the Second World War. Allowing differentiation and Fourier transform in situations where Leibniz?s e Newton?s calculus did not apply, this theory provided rigorous theoretical support to some generalizations, based only in intuition, made by Heaviside and Dirac in the nineteenth century. In 1950, Schwartz won a Fields medal in recognition of the utmost importance of his work. In this study, we will make an introduction of the theory of distributions and present some of its applications in calculus, namely on the generalization of differentiation and partial differential equations
